Closing Reception: “Bridging the Gap” Photo Exhibit

27 08 2007

Photo Show Looks at Bridges

“Bridging the Gap,” an exhibit at Valparaiso University’s Christopher Center for Library and Information Resources, explores two photographers’ interest in bridges and the generational gap between the artists.

The exhibit, which closes on September 2, contains photographs by Lee A. Carlson, professor emeritus of mathematics and computer science, and his grandson Carl Swindle of Goleta, Calif. A closing reception will be held at 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 2, in the Christopher Center Community Room.

The photographs feature bridges of Porter County, China’s Yangtze River and the Canadian Rockies.

Carlson said his interest in photography was fueled by his experiences in mathematics, and developed into a more serious pursuit following his retirement from Valparaiso’s Department of Mathematics and Computer Science a decade ago.

“I find myself attracted by the symmetry and asymmetry around me, in both natural and manmade structures,” Carlson said. “One of my first projects concentrated on the bridges of Porter County, Indiana, and bridges have persisted as a subject matter over the years.”

Nearly 30 of Carlson’s photographs are included in “Bridging the Gap,” along with up to 10 of his grandson’s photographs and a handful of photographs by friends who have contributed to his growth as an artist.

Swindle, 15, is enrolled in courses at Santa Barbara City College, and his photograph “The Perfect Wave” won first place in the nature/landscape category of the college’s annual School of Media Arts competition.

The exhibit is located in Union Hallway on the second floor of the Christopher Center. Building hours are 8 a.m. to midnight.

The closing reception is approved for Core 5th hour credit.
