Coffee for Justice Project Talk
The Teaching Resource Center is pleased to be co-sponsoring a talk by Professor Susan Jackels, Chemistry Department at Seattle University, on her service and research work with Nicaraguan coffee farmers. The talk is this WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 at 4:00 p.m. at the Neils Science Center, room 234. Professor Jackels will speak about her service and research work with Nicaraguan coffee farmers through the Coffee for Justice project. She will share her experiences during four coffee harvest seasons in Nicaragua (2003-2007) working with coffee farmers, relief agency staff, agricultural cooperative staff, Nicaraguan scientists and students, as well as students and faculty colleagues from the U.S.
This presentation will include the coffee production process, the scientific investigation that led to the design of a kit for optimization of coffee fermentation, the experiences of four coffee harvest seasons implementing the kit and method with coffee farmers, and experiences with farmers and families in transition to organic and Fair Trade coffee production.
