Soul Smorgasboard: Luke’s Challenges

On Monday, October 22nd, St. Teresa’s will be hosting the next installment of Soul Smorgasbord, a monthly dinner and discussion series on matters related to faith, religion, and theology. Each session includes a homecooked meal, a short presentation, and a discussion led by that month’s facilitator. This month, V.U. Theology Professor Mark Bartusch will be discussing how the Gospel of Luke is particularly challenging to our usual attempts to understand Christ’s teachings and to our attempts to live out the Christian faith. The food, fun, and fellowship are completely free, and begin at 6 pm in the downstairs Cafe Manna dining room at St. Teresa’s (on LaPorte Ave., across from Lankenau and Alumni Halls).

This event is approved for 5th-hour credit.

Prior to the evening concert, Valpo’s Luce Concert Band and Community/University Concert Band will give a joint performance at 4 p.m. in the Chapel that is free and open to the public. The ensembles will perform works by Williams, Hilliard, Pryor, Hanson, Weingerger and Woo.

Dr. Doebler will be joined by several guest conductors from Northwest Indiana – Matthew Byerly, Philip E. Hahn, John Shotliff, Lext Verstegen and Paul Wagner – in leading the ensembles.

Into The Woods (musical by Stephen Sondheim)

Why are there three films on the Core syllabus? How can we “read” a film and write papers about it? In this presentation, we will discuss some basic film terminology and examine some still shots from Garden State to figure out what this movie might mean as a “text.”

This event is approved for Core 5th-hour credit.

Sponsored by the Valpo Core Program
