15 10 2007

Each performance described below is approved for 5th-hour credit:

Three Valparaiso University bands will perform their first concerts of the season Oct. 20 at the Chapel of the Resurrection.

The Chamber Concert Band, Valparaiso’s premier concert band, will give the first Western Hemisphere performance of Roger Cichy’s Dazzling Lights during a 7:30 p.m. concert. Dazzling Lights was premiered this summer during an international band festival in Australia, during which Chamber Concert Band director Dr. Jeff Doebler led an honor band of Indiana musicians.

The concert, part of Valparaiso’s annual Family Weekend celebration, also will feature works by Karl King, Daniel Kallman, James Barnes, Jerry Bilik, Edwin Franko Goldman, William Latham and Frank Erickson. The performance is free and open to the public.

Prior to the evening concert, Valpo’s Luce Concert Band and Community/University Concert Band will give a joint performance at 4 p.m. in the Chapel that is free and open to the public. The ensembles will perform works by Williams, Hilliard, Pryor, Hanson, Weingerger and Woo.

Dr. Doebler will be joined by several guest conductors from Northwest Indiana – Matthew Byerly, Philip E. Hahn, John Shotliff, Lext Verstegen and Paul Wagner – in leading the ensembles.
