Memorial Service for Chinese Scholars
Dear Core Students,
Monday afternoon at 4 o’clock in the Chapel of the Resurrection members of this University community will gather to mourn the deaths of two Chinese scholars who died in a tragic car accident on their way here from the airport just days before the school year began.
Saturday members of their families arrived from China, accompanied by a delegation with representatives of the two universities in Hangzhou, China, where those scholars worked, Zhejiang University and Zhejiang University of Technology.
Over the years many faculty members from Hangzhou have come here to study, and many students and faculty from this University have spent time in Hangzhou where we have been received with great kindness, hospitality, and good will.
I write to urge you, as new members of this University community, to come to the memorial service, to be a part of this community’s effort to give comfort to the aggrieved. Your presence in the Chapel will matter. Your being there will help to provide comfort to people who’ve made a terribly long, most terribly sad journey to mourn their dead. The memorial has been very carefully planned; it will be an important, beautiful, though not joyful cultural event in the life of this campus. We hope that you will come.
I thank for your time and attention.
