Bach Cantata Vespers

The V.U. student chapters of both the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) and that of the American Guild of Organists (AGO) are pleased to invite the Valparaiso community to a performance of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cantata “Man singet mit Freuden vom Sieg” (BWV 149), which will be presented by mostly student performers within the context of the Order of Vespers on Sunday, September 27, 2009 at 5:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Resurrection as part of the chapel’s yearlong 50th anniversary celebration.

Bach’s cantata series, like those of his contemporaries, formed the primary musical events of Sunday and festival services in his church at Leipzig (1723-1750). A combination of operatic and sacred music, the cantata involves chorus, orchestra, soloists and assembly. In this respect, it was how the church of the time reflected on and proclaimed the Word of God. This particular work, “Man singet mit Freuden vom Sieg,” celebrates and reflects on the victory of the angelic forces of Saint Michael over those of Satan (based on Revelation 12:7-12 and Matthew 18:1-11). Its seven musical sections take listeners and performers alike from the rejoicing of God’s triumph over Satan and his angels to the individual conviction of the same to the prayers for watchful care by guardian angels to the final chorus of prayer that peace and joy may accompany our final earthly hours.

The service will be preceded by 20 minutes of pre-service music, during which listeners are invited to sit and listen or meditate. Please come and experience this wonderful selection of music and time of devotion – we hope to see you there!

Or better yet, as in, “The Lighter and Wordfest proudly present their third annual Cabaret, at which no money will be collected and no melancholy will be found (or that which is found will be tidily swept up and packaged into art).”

Place: Refectory in Mueller Hall

Fare: Dinner provided free!

Hymnsing

The V.U. student chapter of the American Guild of Organists is sponsoring a hymnsing on Monday evening, February 9th from 7:30pm – 8:30pm in the upstairs gallery of the chapel (around the organ console). It is a part of the A.G.O.’s official “International Year of the Organ” celebration, and the theme we have chosen for our hymnsing is “Hymns Through History.” Come to enjoy singing many hymn favorites as well as hearing mini lectures before each hymn that will help us understand the hymn’s historical and musical context and significance. A program sure to enrich your appreciation for this dearly-loved musical tradition!
