Paul Gerhardt HymnSing

29 10 2007

with VU student and faculty organists, open to the public

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007 from 8:00 - 9:00 pm, in the Chapel of the Resurrection

In honor of the 400th anniversary year of Paul Gerhardt’s birth, the VU community is invited to hear some biographical background on this hymn author and sing some of the glorious texts that he wrote. This commemorative event is a wonderful way to honor this man’s accomplishments. Gerhardt lived through many adversities, including the 30 years war in Germany, the loss of 4 of his 5 children and his wife to death, and being sickly in health for most of his life. Yet, he still wrote beautiful poems and texts for hymns today that reflect an astonishing amount of comfort and hope to be found in trusting God throughout all trials in life. His story is inspiring - this information will help you to really appreciate these (and other) hymns  and, perhaps more importantly, will change your perspective on your own life’s difficulties and trials. So please come!

Refreshments will be served following the event.

Concert Bands to Perform at Chapel

15 10 2007

Each performance described below is approved for 5th-hour credit:

Three Valparaiso University bands will perform their first concerts of the season Oct. 20 at the Chapel of the Resurrection.

The Chamber Concert Band, Valparaiso’s premier concert band, will give the first Western Hemisphere performance of Roger Cichy’s Dazzling Lights during a 7:30 p.m. concert. Dazzling Lights was premiered this summer during an international band festival in Australia, during which Chamber Concert Band director Dr. Jeff Doebler led an honor band of Indiana musicians.

The concert, part of Valparaiso’s annual Family Weekend celebration, also will feature works by Karl King, Daniel Kallman, James Barnes, Jerry Bilik, Edwin Franko Goldman, William Latham and Frank Erickson. The performance is free and open to the public.

Prior to the evening concert, Valpo’s Luce Concert Band and Community/University Concert Band will give a joint performance at 4 p.m. in the Chapel that is free and open to the public. The ensembles will perform works by Williams, Hilliard, Pryor, Hanson, Weingerger and Woo.

Dr. Doebler will be joined by several guest conductors from Northwest Indiana – Matthew Byerly, Philip E. Hahn, John Shotliff, Lext Verstegen and Paul Wagner – in leading the ensembles.

Into The Woods (musical by Stephen Sondheim)

15 10 2007

Approved for 5th-hour credit:

Into the Woods, directed by Lee Orchard, will be performed at the University Theatre Oct. 19 and 26 at 8 p.m., Oct. 20 and 27 at 2 p.m., and Oct. 21 and 28 at 7 p.m. A talk back session with the director, cast and crew will immediately follow the Oct. 20 and 27 matinee performances.

One of Sondheim’s most popular works, characters from numerous popular fairy tales intermingle during the musical. While being a lively and irreverent fantasy, director Dr. Lee Orchard says Into the Woods also is a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children.
