New issue of the Lighter is now online

The Spring 2012 issue of the Lighter, Valpo’s student literary journal, is now available on its new website. This issue includes selected poetry, prose, and artwork from Valparaiso University students, as well as an interview with author Thomas Montgomery Fate by Valpo student Rebecca C. Werner. The new issue is edited by Jeremy Reed, assisted by Ian Roseen and designed by Jacob Just. Print issues are also available across Valpo’s campus, so just pick one up today or visit the website to read the issue. The website for the Lighter is hosted by ValpoScholar, Valpo’s new e-publishing service. Valparaiso Fiction Review (VFR) Summer 2012 issue is now available

The Christopher Center for Library and Information Resources and the Valparaiso University Department of English are delighted to announce the release of the Summer 2012 issue of Valparaiso Fiction Review (VFR), the national (international) literary journal. This issue of the journal contains compositions of short fiction by David Meischen, Megan M. Erwin, Susan Solomon, Marysa LaRowe, Corey Mertes, Amie Whittemore, and Joe Ponepinto.

We invite everyone to examine this second issue of VFR to read the fine stories, and we encourage all to pass along word to others who might be interested. VFR is published through ValpoScholar, Valpo’s digital publishing service and is accessible at http://scholar.valpo.edu/vfr/.

Library reception honors Valpo authors on April 19th

Members of the Valpo community who have published books in 2011/12 will be recognized at the 12th Annual Valparaiso University Authors Reception in the Community Room of the Christopher Center on Thursday, April 19. Refreshments will be served at 4:00 pm and the opening remarks will be by Martin Buinicki of the Department of English. The recipient of the Library Award for Undergraduate Research will be announced during the reception. All are welcome.

The Library at Valparaiso University sponsors this reception each year in recognition of National Library Week.

This year’s honorees are Janet Brown, Martin Buinicki, Edward Byrne, Brad Eden, Ruth Ellen Foster, Kristen Mauk, Philip Potempa, Nola Schmidt, Julien Smith, Bernard Trujillo, Peter Venturelli and Linda Whitton.

Chronicle of Higher Ed. Subscription Purchased

Good news! Based on overwhelmingly positive feedback from the campus community, we have purchased a campus wide online subscription to the Chronicle. In addition to campus availability, access is available from off-campus when logging in with a ValpoNet username and password. SciFinder now more available for Valpo users

We now have access to SciFinder for multiple simultaneous users! SciFinder is an award-winning research tool designed especially for use by students and faculty to easily access literature from many scientific disciplines, including biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, materials science, agricultural science, and more. It was previously limited to one user at a time. Use is still limited to University students, faculty and staff, but once you have a SciFinder login, you can access the database from off campus. 100,000 downloads for ValpoScholar

ValpoScholar, the Christopher Center and Law Library’s publishing and archiving service, recently had its 100,000th download. Launched on March 4, 2011, ValpoScholar has showcased various documents and publications of Valpo’s, including the Valparaiso University Law Review, Valparaiso Fiction Review, and the Valpo Core Reader. Several of Valpo’s faculty members and students have also seen a high number of downloads for their scholarship, including former law student Shannon Noder, who has seen her article “Talking and Texting While Driving: A Look at Regulating Cell Phone Use Behind the Wheel” downloaded nearly 4000 times in the past year. The site has also had visitors from over 110 countries in its first year of operation. New E-Resource: Oxford Biblical Studies Online

Attention theology students and faculty: we have just purchased access to Oxford Biblical Studies online. This is a wonderful resource that includes not only biblical texts, but also many reference sources such as the Oxford Encyclopedia of the Books of the Bible and the Encyclopedia of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Hundreds of images and maps provide visual perspectives of the biblical world. Tools & Resources contains Internet resources selected by specialists in the field, thematic guides, lesson plans, suggested reading lists for further research, and more.It is available from our database pages or this link.
