Announcing Stream2RSS – Bringing RSS back to Twitter

So today I’m announcing a new service that was created in house here by our systems team – Stream2RSS

This app allows users to login and create publicly available RSS feeds for users Twitter streams. We needed this function internally for a couple of projects so instead of just hacking together some quick and dirty script to work with those couple of cases we thought it would be better to turn it into a web app and share it with others.

Putting thought into your redesign

I’ve enjoyed seeing the work/thoughts of Dave Kadavy for a while now. I first became aware of him after seeing a talk about Comic Sans given by him at Ignite Chicago (holy crap that was over 2 years ago.) I was then excited when he announced his book Design for Hackers and was one of the first to pick it up (though I’ve still only made it about half way through as I keep forgetting to finish it) because it sounded like the perfect take on design for people like myself with the ability to know what I want out of something but lack the ability to really explain what it is that isn’t just right.

This week I gave a short talk about the Account Management System that focused on the architecture and function of the system. Here are the slides if you weren’t able to attend:

A github clone….for recipes

I caught this article recently on VentureBeat about a new site for recipes that was getting it’s inspiration from Github called ForkTheCookbook. Back when I was looking for a site to put up my own recipes I wasn’t happy with what was out there. Most of the recipes sites are clunky to use and then pollute your recipe page with tons of ads and look like garbage in general. I also wished that there was a better way to attribute recipes back to others and to really share your changes more than having a million recipes that are slightly different based on the same thing on the web. I even thought about how a site like github would be great for something like this. Luckily someone else thought the same and made my thought a reality.

The site is really clean and easy to use for entering recipes. It’s a well thought out UI for what you actually need when entering a recipe and nothing more. The only thing it’s missing is search but from their blog I see that’s coming.

Unreal Engine 3 on Android looks beautiful

Unreal Engine 3 on Android looks beautiful

Long time no see. Had a baby and have been dealing with that. Now I’m back though I doubt I’ll be writing as frequently as last year.

I happened to catch the announcement today that Epic has released Epic Citadel today for Android and decided to check it out on my Nexus 7. Epic Citadel isn’t a game but mainly a tech demo to show the power of the Android platform for rending beautiful graphics using Unreal Engine 3. The above screenshot was from the benchmark I ran and the FPS stayed smooth pretty much the whole way through. The only time it dipped from the high 50s/low 60s I was constantly getting was in some views from outside the castle.
