A while ago I first heard about 3D printers. I heard that there were contests and such giving them away for the creation of a product that you can then sell. I’ve heard about people who use them to make shoes and bikinis. Cool ideas and something I’m sure could be useful.
But then today I heard that the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York had a hackathon, where they encouraged people to help map out the sculptures. Then these mappings are available for printing on a 3D printer. So now you could have a priceless sculpture in your home for the cost of a 3D printer.
You can see some of the sculptures that were mapped at http://www.thingiverse.com/met.
