IT Camp – Hyper-V with Server 2012

Today I went to the Microsoft offices in Downers Grove, Illinois for the Microsoft IT Camp on Hyper-V on Server 2012. It was an all day event powerpoint and demos in the morning and hands-on lab in the afternoon. The morning reminded me of a lecture from college a good combination of powerpoint and watching demos on screen. The second half in order to participate we had to bring a laptop and worked at our own pace with lab handouts. An instructor and a Chicago based Microsoft MVP (Most Valuable Professional) were on hand to help you through the lab, answer questions about the lab as well as any questions you had about Windows 8 or Server 2012.

Active Directory Migration Team Meeting Minutes 6/26/12

2:30 PM to 3:30 PM  – Harre Union – Victory Bell Room

Attending:  Ben Acheff, Pilar Domer, Matt Hernes, Becky Klein, Kevin Ledbetter, Rich Miller, Rachel Rivera

Agenda Topics

  • What “lessons learned” from Google Migration can we apply to project?
  • Who we are going to initially contact from each department?
  • How will we structure the information gathering portion of the project?
  • How often should we meet?
  • Subdivide into role-based groups or keep everything in one big group?
  • Talk about what the discovery process should include.
  • Please add anything else you feel needs to be discussed

Decisions

  • One of the most important aspects of the project will be communicating with the customer
  • Many of the complaints brought forth in the Google project responses were simply due to lack of knowledge, i.e. complaints about no training offered, when actually there were many sessions. This re-enforces the need to communicate through every available method.
  • Enlist people from within each department to assist in getting our message out, use as wide variety of methods of communication.
  • Tip Sheets may be more applicable to many aspects of the project than actual formal training session.
  • Offer to send representatives to departmental meetings to give a short presentation outlining the project and its goals.  Hold Q & A sessions at these meetings.
  • It was mentioned the Novell Application Launcher will work on computers joined to the domain.
  • Migrating the entire university to AD at once was discussed and determined to be not feasible.
  • Ben and Rich are planning a test lab environment in the CCLIR and possibly implementing AD in a new lab in ASB.
  • The team agreed to all meet every Tuesday 2:30 – 3:30 PM for at least the next two months.
  • On next meeting agenda, conceive and agree on an project announcement.  Determine the methods the message is sent.
  • Kevin mentioned Jeanie Johnson will be sending an updated list of Dean & Chairs when it is finalized.  The current list he has is for 2011-2012.

Next meeting

  • Tuesday, July 3, 2012 – 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM
  • Harre Union – Victory Bell Room

The Right Tool

Having the right tool for the job just makes life easier; this is very true in the IT world. My role as Systems Administrator requires me to have multiple PCs running at various times; this includes a mixture of Windows XP and Windows 7 instances. Using Oracle’s VirtualBox, a mixture of diverse installs are available to me on my base Windows 7 image. Having a machine that will support a number of these installs running concurrently is a big plus.
