The Valparaiso University Crusader Pep band is an organization sponsored by the VU Athletic Department and Music Department. It is comprised of VU students who share an interest in performing a wide variety of music to enhance the atmosphere of athletic events while supporting the teams. Alumni, faculty, staff, community members, and high school students are also welcome to attend and play with the Pep Band.

The instrumentation of the band is primarily brass and woodwind, but we have recently established a drumline which is featured during volleyball team introductions, football & men’s basketball games and for the first time this upcoming year, soccer games. Auditions are required for the drumline, and take place at the beginning of the Fall semester. Other instrumentation includes drum set and various electronic instruments.

Members are expected to attend rehearsals and events as often as they are able and to stay in contact with the director regarding their attendance. Members are responsible for signing in at every rehearsal and event, and points are accrued for each according to the Pep Band constitution. The official uniform of the Pep Band is a yellow polo with the Crusader logo that members must purchase upon joining the band.

As a part of the Horizon League, both the men’s and women’s basketball teams have an opportunity to travel for conference tournaments. By invitation (based on attendance points), Pep Band members also have an opportunity to travel with the teams for these games. The athletic department provides all accommodations for band members during tournament travel. Band members are also eligible to travel, should any team make the NCAA tournament (all expenses paid).
