Week Four – Campbell

It will be Homecoming Weekend on the campus of Valparaiso University this weekend as the Crusaders face the Fighting Camels of Campbell University. Campbell is currently 1-2 on the 2013 season. It is the PFL opener for both schools.

Campbell has a new head coach. Coach Minter was an assistant at Liberty University prior to his appointment as Campbell.

The Camel offense goes through their two quarterbacks. Brian Hudson, a transfer from Liberty, and Dakota Wolf. Hudson and Wolf are first and third in rushing this year for Campbell. They pride themselves on running the ball. They have a big, physical offensive line. Our challenge will be to stop the run on Saturday.

Campbell works out of a 4-3 alignment on defense. Senior defensive end Taurean Lynch brings good pressure off the edge. Corner Brandon Mobley is the leader of an athletic secondary. We will have to do a better job sustaining our run blocks and make sure we protect the quarterback on Saturday.

We suffered our second consecutive close game loss versus William Jewell. We need to prevent the big play on defense and capitalize on our scoring opportunities.

We had positives on both sides of the ball against William Jewell. Our defense forced five three and out series. We held Jewell to 33% on third down conversions. We forced two misses on place kicks and forced two turnovers. The defense did not allow a score in two of the three sudden change situations (after an offensive turnover). Two big plays hurt and these must be eliminated.

William Jewell put eight and sometimes nine men on or near the line of scrimmage. They were determined to stop the run. Our offense responded with a school record 495 passing yards. Our offense is based on taking what the opponents’ defense gives us. We did a good job of that against William Jewell. However, we turned the ball over three times. We cannot do that again versus Campbell.

Our Players of the Week for the William Jewell game were:

Offensive Prep: Dylan Simkin
Defensive Prep: Ali Shaine
Special Teams Prep: Branden Slattery
Offensive Line: Stuart Barkley
Offensive Line Knockdown: Sean Cook
Offense: Eric Hoffman
Defense: Alex Green
Big Play: Tanner Kuramata

This week, our coaching staff will be joining college football coaches all over the country and the American Football Coaches Association in the Coach to CureMD program. Duchenne MD is a disease that attacks young boys. Coaches all over the country will be wearing the Coach To CureMD patch. Please consider joining the fight at:

We have had a good preparation with the bye week. I told the team our slate is clean as we are 0-0 in PFL play. We are focusing on getting better today so we can be at out best on Saturday.
