SALT partnered with Red Cloud Indian School, located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. The YAWA Project sought to raise $15,000 to fund the technological materials necessary to implement a new reading project at Red Cloud. The school depends on private donations for more than 95% of its operating budget and provides free tuition for its students. Native American causes are largely underfunded and Pine Ridge has been named among the poorest places in the United States.
The project specifically sought to provide Red Cloud with twelve document cameras and twelve LCD projectors to implement the Journeys Reading Program. The technology allows teachers to more efficiently teach reading strategies, and will improve the students’ education.
A total of $20,139 was raised, which exceeded the campaign’s goal. The school was able to purchase document cameras and LCD projectors for all k-5 classrooms. Through the YAWA Project, SALT was able to impact 600 Lakota boys and girls living on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
